Foster Process

Fostering is how we save lives. You are the most important part of a rescue! The typical fostering process is, either you want to foster a specific dog that we posted about, or you want to foster in general, and once we rescue a dog in need, we reach out to you and make sure it’s the right fit. Needing and placing a foster usually happens quickly, but sometimes not. You fill out a foster application, we review it, reach out to you, if you are approved, we will place you with a dog in need. Stand Up Pups does a home check on your house, makes sure everything is good to go. You will sign a foster agreement form upon receiving the foster dog,

Typical Questions asked about fostering:

How long will I be fostering? It depends, it can last a week, to a few months, or longer. If you are someone that can only “temp foster” you can notate that on your application. Temporary fostering is always helpful when there is a dog needing a home asap or will be euthanized in a kill shelter and we need to be quick on our feet. Sometimes one to two weeks is helpful until we find a permanent home. Ideally, we want all fosters to keep the dog until adopted but we are flexible and encourage any and all help! We also love and appreciate repeat foster parents, once your foster dog is adopted and you are ready for another one, great! If you need a break, no worries, or if you are done for the foreseeable future, that’s ok too, you saved a life!

What do I need to pay for?

As a foster, the main thing you need to pay for is food for your foster dog, toys, bones, dog beds, crates (can all be donated if needed) and encouraged to spoil your foster dog, you are more than welcome to go crazy at the store and have a bucket of toys waiting for them! Anything medical related, is covered by the rescue. IF you are experiencing financial problems and you can not afford dog food, no worries, we will make sure to get donations and supply you with what’s needed. Providing a loving and safe home is what we need and what they do as well.

What other things am I needed for while fostering a dog?

If you are available to take your foster dog to vet appointments, adoption events, or out and about promoting the dog, that is great! If you can not do so, we work together to find a volunteer that can take the foster dog to and from your house when needed. We also ask that you keep us updated with photos and videos and updates on their process and the things that you do together! It helps us promote your foster dog for adoption!

What if I fall in love with my foster dog?

Well that is great! Of course, it’s hard not to. The moment you feel like you want this dog permanently in your life, reach out to us. As the foster parent, you will be high on the list of approved adopters. We will talk it out and see if it is the best fit for the dog and go from there!

What if i can not foster a current dog any longer due to a number of issues?

We ask that you be upfront with us and keep us informed about what is going on. If you can no longer foster the dog, we ask that you give us two weeks to find a new foster home for them.
